3rd Fish

This was an awesome lesson! Students folded their paper to make interactive art. When the fish illustration is closed you see an innocent fish, however when you pull the pap open it exposes the full fish-teeth and all!

Students practiced techniques to make oil pastels have a painterly effect. They did a terrific job!

A Love Letter

Most every Monday in the art room is knows as "Mobile Monday". It is a day that we have a mobile lab cart meaning we have laptops for each students to work. We start the year with typing practice and games (BBC dance mat typing is awesome!) and basics of entering a web address, refreshing pages, etc. 

Once I feel students have the basics of computer and typer literacy we start the true fun. This weeks 3rd and 4th grade artist were asked to write a "Love Letter" to a selected artist based on their personal preference between Van Gogh's rich movement style and Seurat's bright pointillism style.  Students reflected on why they liked the particular style and wrote to the artist. Below are samplings of their class-chatter assignment posts.

Dear,Van Gogh ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥

       Your artwork is amazing with contrast and balance! The mood is dark and wonderful at the same time. This starry Night panting made me feel amazing and talented that I can do anything I set my mind to. I feel your artwork has movement and design in it and it makes me feel alive and free! I feel the artist was tring to make his artwork stand out to every young artist! Whenever I looked at the panting for the first time it was exceptional and plesent! I felt as if the stars were circling my heart!

      You have lots of style in your ideas. I love how you did dots instead of strokes with a paintbrush. It looks very realistic and has lots of movement. Dear, Van Gogh I like that it has movement.  It looks like waves in the sky, with some houses below, a big mountain up in the sky, and some stars with the waves. The blue sky is the water and the sweralls are the waves.  The waves also look like boomerangs shooting acros the sky. hitting the stars and bounsing off. The houses look like people gazing off into the sky.  looking at the stars,mountains, and hills. As you can see that the picture is beautiful, with the stars, the mountains, and the houses. Dear Van Gogh, I love  Starry Night.   It is just outstanding.   This artwork makes me feel like an artist.   I think its crazy how you move the brush I could not do that.   If that was my artwork I would ad people outside of the houses.     Starry Night is my favorite art in the world.    I think your movement is a really cool design for art.   I like this art work because I like the space design, the colors, and the movement.   How do you swirl your brush the way you do? 4th ART with HEART

4th Grade artists created these gorgeous 3D heart displays. They created their own designs based on the elements and principles of design!

Picasso's Rose Period

Our 3rd grade artist recently completed an art critique that compared and contrasted Picasso's Blue and Rose period paintings. Picasso's Blue period is mostly known for the dreary blue tones and sad subject matter that reflected his depressed mood. Then came Picasso's Rose period, after the artist had fallen in love with someone special; during this period his works were comprised of primarily rose colors and happier entertainers as his subjects.

Students worked in groups to complete a "table talk" art critique. We of course used our ArtSmart resources to use identify appropriate ARTiculation of our thoughts! These talks are a fabulous time for learning because there are really no wrong answers (expect for no answer at all). It is great to see such young artists challenge themselves to really look at a work of art, decide their personal opinion of it. Then they look deep into the paintings to identify ART words.

To finish the lesson each student designed a Rose themed heart to celebrate Picasso's loving mood change.

Community Service Update

Our second annual Holiday Community Service Project was a great success. I am happy to announce that Ridgedale raised over $500 for WVU children's hospital. That is amazing! Thank you to all who participated, volunteered and donated! Thank you also to Miss Southern WV for talking to our student about supporting our community!

MLK Gallery Display

Mr. Rogers 2nd grade class created some awesome art made from pillow cases as part of Art Mons annual MLK display. The theme this year is "every great thing begins with a dream" That is why we created our art on pillow cases. Half of the students work will be displayed at Arts Mon with a reception Friday, the 17th from 5-8pm. The gallery will remain open until Months end. The other half of the students work will be displayed in the Ridgedale library.
