3rd Radial Op Art

3rd grade artist learned all about the art style of OP ART. It is art that uses shapes, colors and math to create an optical illusion for the viewer, like a magic trick. Check out the famous artist MC Escher to see some cool stuff!
We finished this project with complimentary colors (color across from each other on the color wheel).

1st Warm/Cool Klee Castles

First grade artist studied the famous artist Paul Klee who was known for using repeating shapes and colors to create abstracted buildings and city-scapes. We started by finding shapes in Klee's works we then using large building blocks to practice repeating and stacking shapes. Then we drew from our created buildings. We finished with Warm Willy or Cool Carly's favorite colors. We also graphed our color choices and added them together. MATH IN ART...SAAAAY WHAAAT :)

4th Holland Tulip Fileds

Did you know that you can farm a rainbow?? OK Well sort of ...
In Holland, farmers grow mass fields of tulips and from an areal view if looks like rainbows! We took a virtual tour at airpano.com (check it out, lots of places to virtually visit). We also learned about perspective (things far away look small and things close up look large). We created a one point perspective drawing by using a vanishing point. We finished with an analogous color scheme.
ENJOY & CHECK OUT THE VIRTUAL TOUR HERE.

2nd Robots

This was a FUN second grade art project. Students looked at shapes as parts of a robot.  They also learned about "friend" or analogous colors (colors that sit next to each other in the rainbow or color wheel. We finished this project off with a printmaking design to border our robot.

Eye on Color

5th grade artist examined the differences between realism and surrealism. Students then used charcoal medium to give shade and depth to a realistic sketch of the human eye, students also used oil pastel medium to create a color wheel inside of the eye, giving it a surreal effect.

To culminate the lesson 5th graders held a debate over which art style was more interesting: Hyper-realism or Surrealism. The class was spilt into research, survey, debate teams and a judge and a jury. Hyper realism was the winner in both the debate and the school survey!

Be sure to check out Hyper real art: paintings with such detail to light and color they appear to be a photograph!

Color, Repetition & Movement

4th grade artists focused on Monochromatic color theory (using tints and shades of one color) along with the principles of repetition and movement to create these color value silhouettes.

Kandinsky's Colors

3rd Grade artist started this lesson with a "table talk" about why colors are important to artists. We came up with some wonderful answers! We then looked at the work of Kandinsky- an abstract artist- who used line and color like music notes to compose pieces of art. Students combined their knowledge of color theory and their ideas about Kandinsky's work to compose a piece of their own. I am loving everything about this lesson!

Kinder Color

Kindergartens first project of the year! We started with some chromatography- the separating of colors to find the base of our colored markers.
After our mixing/separating experiments we read Planting a Rainbow by Lois Ehlert. Kinders then used magazine pages to tear and sort color to collage for a rainbow garden. After the rainbow garden was complete we created poetic word clouds with words that came to our minds when we focused on a specific color.

Watercolor Leaves

1st Grade painted these watercolor leaves by blending cool colors for the background and warm colors for the leaves!

Primary Pumpkins

Kinders created these cute pumpkins using only the three primary colors: red, yellow and blue. They created shades of orange by mixing the red and yellow. Green leaves were added with yellow and blue. A brown stem was topped off by mixing all three primary colors together.

Tissue Paper Trees

These fall trees were created by our 1st grade artists. They applied modgepodge to torn tissue paper to represent the leaves and used black crayon to draw the trunk and limbs of the tree. In this lesson students discussed color theory in the natural world and why colors can change.

ARTfully Delicious!

Second grade first project of the year explore knowledge in the content area of COLOR. Developing on last years skills, students used white and black paint to create TINTS AND SHADES of a color. Tints are lighter and shades are darker. They cut and sorted these new colors into a yummy ice cream cone.

After the art project was finished these second grade students participated in their first art critique. This is a time to use ART SMART words to talk about their own art work as well as their peers. Below are a list of ART SMART VOCABULARY words we like to use!

4th Grade Colors Wheels

4th Grade created 8 section color wheels. They cut them into radial designs and then topped them off with black line design patterns onto each section. The look gorgeous!
